Substitute Teaching SY 2025-2026
American School of The Hague
The American School of The Hague (ASH) prefers to utilize substitute teachers who have teaching certification and experience. This is particularly important for Elementary School substitutes, who oversee their students’ learning in core subject areas throughout the school day and are responsible for the health and safety of our youngest students. However, we do have some qualified substitutes who are not certified teachers. At minimum, a successful candidate should have significant experience working with school-age children and an understanding of the American educational system.
Applicants for substitute teaching should submit a cover letter of interest, a resume with current contact information, and proof of the right to work in the Netherlands (copies of both sides of the residence card).
Substitute teaching is not a contracted position for the school, so candidates must demonstrate their legal eligibility for work.
Qualified applicants for substitute teaching will be invited to an interview at the school and fill out informational paperwork. Unfortunately, because of the volume of applications we receive, we can not guarrantee an immediate response from our side. If you are invited for an interview, you will be contacted directly by one of our divisional assistants.
Please note we hold three interiew rounds each year. These are scheduled as follows:
- Applications received in August - September --> Interviews held end September
- Applications received in October - November --> Interviews held end November
- Applications received in January --> Interviews held in February
Candidates are selected based on travel time (preferably less than 30 minutes), availability (preferably 4 or 5 days), and qualifications and experiences.
For the group interview in September and November we only invite candidates who meet our preferred criteria for travel time and availability due to the high number of applicants during these periods.
For the February group interview, we also invite candidates who fall outside the preferred criteria for travel time and provided they demonstrate strong qualifications and experiences.
Successful candidates for substitute teaching will be placed on the school’s sub list. When a substitute is needed, the Elementary, Middle or High School divisional assistants will call as far in advance as possible. Please note that it is usually not possible to give a lot of notice; it is usually a few days or less. Therefore, flexibility is the key to success in substituting regularly at ASH. The more often one accepts the opportunity to sub, the more often one is likely to be called.
As a substitute teacher, you might be called in to sub on short notice (e.g. at 6 AM / 7 AM to come in at 8 AM the same day). Ideally we are therefore looking for substitute teachers who live within reasonable travelling distance of our school in Wassenaar, The Netherlands.
The substitute’s gross salary is € 17.00 (certified substitutes) per hour worked. This sum is inclusive of 8% holiday pay and 10% in lieu of accrual of paid leave.
The American School of The Hague is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Aligned with the recommendations of the International Task Force on Child Protection, we hold ourselves to a high standard of effective recruiting practices with specific attention to child protection.
