American School of The Hague (ASH) is looking for a part-time High School Library Assistant for 2 days per week. Start date is as soon as possible.

You are an experienced professional with an university degree and have some years working experience in an American, Canadian or international schools or university (preferred). You are familiar with current U.S./international educational philosophy. You have knowledge of library organization and procedures and have a good understanding of the Dewey Decimal Classification System.

In addition you;

  • have experience working in a library;
  • have self-directed interest in learning new skills and exploring library information and instructional resources;
  • have experience using or working with library automation systems;
  • have excellent information and communications technology skills. Willingness to learn new systems and applications as needed;
  • have a high level of clerical skills including record-keeping, file maintenance, and general correspondence via email;
  • have the ability to undertake effective research using print and electronic materials.

The Role: The High School, Grades 9 to 12, supports an international student body of close to 450 students. The role is supervised by the High School Principal and Assistant Principal and you’ll work in close collaboration with the High School Librarian and grade level teams.
The High School Library Assistant reports to the High School Librarian.

The Work: As a High School Library Assistant, your daily activities involve providing professional, attentive, front-line support for all Library patrons throughout the school day. The majority of your time, you will be organizing and maintaining the physical library collection for accessibility. You manage circulation functions, including check-in, check-out, holds, and renewals processing, and shelving of materials and are responsible for monitoring and managing the Library’s printers, keeping both well-stocked with paper all the times and assisting patrons in their use. You will process all materials and create a copy or original cataloguing records in the Destiny Library Management system with guidance from the Librarian and maintain and update Destiny Resource Lists for curricular projects and independent reading.
You’ll assist in the training of students and teachers using the Destiny online catalogue, Overdrive, subscription databases, and other curated digital tools.

In addition you;

  • develop and maintain a shared filing system using Google Team Drive to manage periodicals, budgeting, and purchase of materials, supplies, and any other administrative paperwork as coordinated by the Librarian;
  • collect and organize materials for research projects and classes in consultation with the librarian;
  • maintain stationery supplies for student project use and orders supplies as needed;
  • perform regular inventories and weeding of library materials under the direction of the Librarian;
  • run routine overdue notices for Library patrons;
  • monitor student use of the library with a focus on instructional use and health and safety;
  • assist students and teachers in locating print and non-print resources;
  • assist with library displays;
  • develop an awareness of Young Adult and other fiction, nonfiction, and periodicals in order to be an active and enthusiastic guide for our students’ curricular and independent reading;
  • monitor the library facility throughout the day, encouraging students to push chairs in after use and throw away trash;
  • supervise the library facility when the Librarian is teaching classes or away;
  • perform other duties and assignments as necessary.
