Social Media & Content Intern
Marketing & Communications
About Terre des Hommes
Terre des Hommes Netherlands (TdH NL) protects children by preventing and stopping child exploitation, and by empowering children to make their voices count. Our work is grounded in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and seeks to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Purpose of the role
The Social Media & Content Intern is co-responsible for strengthening the online visibility of TdH NL, our spokespersons, programmes and campaigns across social media.
The fun part of doing this role is that you will work close to the heart of our communications work. You will follow what our main spokespersons are working on, spot opportunities for content, help shape stories for LinkedIn and other platforms, and translate complex child rights issues into short, clear and engaging posts, scripts and videos.
You will be challenged by the need to make sensitive and complex topics accessible without making them simplistic. You will learn how to work with real stories, real people and real impact, while staying careful with consent, dignity, safety and tone.
After your internship, your greatest success will be that you have helped build a stronger and more recognisable social media presence for TdH NL. You will have contributed to content that makes our work more visible, our spokespersons more present, and our mission easier to understand and support.
The team
Our team consists of colleagues in the Netherlands, supporting the visibility, positioning and engagement work of TdH NL. The team is managed by the Communications Manager.
We work in a collaborative, informal and professional way. We are a small team with big topics on the table, so we like people who think along, take initiative and are not afraid to ask questions. We work closely with colleagues from campaigns, fundraising, design, web, programmes and advocacy. We like to support each other, share ideas, and turn serious subjects into communication that people can understand, remember and act on.
Key responsibilities
Your job is to help TdH NL become more visible, consistent and engaging on social media, especially through spokesperson content and short-form storytelling (video). To do this you will:
- Support the planning, creation and publication of social media content for LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube and the website;
- Keep track of the agendas, public appearances, interviews, events and key moments of our main spokespersons, and signal opportunities for content;
- Write short scripts, captions, post texts and content formats for spokespersons, for example for short videos, LinkedIn posts or campaign content;
- Translate raw input from spokespersons, programme experts and campaigns into clear and engaging social media content;
- Help film and edit short videos, interviews and behind-the-scenes content when needed, either at the office or on location;
- Think along about how we can grow our follower base and increase our visibility on LinkedIn and other relevant channels;
- Create platform-specific content with attention to tone, timing, visuals, subtitles and a strong opening;
- Help maintain a clear content planning, linked to the communications and campaign calendar;
- Archive and label visual material correctly in FileFlow, including consent registration where needed;
- Apply the Ethical Content Policy when working with content that includes children, young people or identifiable individuals; and
- Contribute ideas for new social media formats that fit our campaigns, spokespersons and target audiences;
- Support the Communications Manager and content team with ad hoc content tasks around campaigns, events and public moments.
Knowledge and experience
The ideal candidate will be committed to the mission and vision of TdH NL and has a strong interest in social media, content creation, storytelling and child rights communication. More specifically:
- You are studying a degree (MBO, HBO or WO) in communications, journalism, media, marketing, film, content creation or a related field.
- You have experience creating social content (posts, carousels, scripts) and video editing skills (using Canva, CapCut, or Adobe CC).
- You are skilled at turning complex information into clear, engaging content tailored to platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, and YouTube.
- You have strong writing skills and can adapt your tone to different audiences and platforms.
- You are interested in current affairs, social issues, child rights, international development and/or online safety.
- Previous experience in a non-profit, campaign, political, media or advocacy environment is an asset.
- You work carefully with sensitive stories, visual material, consent and identifiability.
- You are proactive, curious, structured and eager to learn.
- You have strong interpersonal and collaborative skills and enjoy working with colleagues from different teams.
- You are comfortable asking for feedback and improving your work based on input.
- You speak and write Dutch and English fluently.
