For our customer, the European Space Agency (ESA), we are seeking an experienced 1st Level IT Operations and System Administrator to work at ESA’s ESTEC site in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

Job description

You will be part of Terma’s IT team responsible for providing friendly and effective support to all users who have IT requests and issues related to the TEC activities and shall fulfil both the service requests and problem/issues notifications with high quality. You will be engaging with ESA's technical systems addressing to Technical IT inquiries and problems connected to the supported operations.

The IT operations and administration for TEC refers to the activities required in order to maintain the operations of the necessary IT systems, tools and services required for the business activities of TEC. This includes applications, tools and systems used by both end-users and by the technical stakeholders.

You will be part of the Terma Space Division which has for 50 years delivered mission-customized software and hardware products including power systems and star trackers as well as services to the European space market. We have supported a large number of pioneering European scientific and Earth Observation satellite missions and continue to be contracted for the development and delivery of software and hardware systems and services for numerous ongoing and future European, and international missions.

Terma Space operates out of Denmark, The Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Romania, and the UK.

How to succeed in this position?

Your tasks will typically include but are not limited to:

  • Operation and management of the unified TEC IT Helpdesk System. Maintain and configure the Helpdesk system.
  • Support the users with simple requests (Level 1 support).
  • Provide first line of support to users, responding to users’ incidents, such as restore user account, install software, solve issues with network services, create or disable users accounts, etc
  • Provide timely and accurate information and feedback to the users on the status and resolution of their requests, incidents, and problems
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve issues related to the availability, reliability, performance, and scalability of the IT infrastructure.
  • Administrative operations and back-end support for the TEC Conference Tool
  • Managing and maintaining the IT applications, including web applications, mobile applications, databases, etc.
  • Operation and user support for technical CAD 3D models management tool.
  • Middleware tools in used by 3rd parties internal or external to TEC systems: such as:
    • Configuration of a Nginx web server
    • Deployment and configuration of a set of Web Services
    • Operations, access control and maintenance of a DBMS in use by a deployed TEC application
  • Ensure that users are informed of any service disruption, both via active communication and via the availability of dashboards.
  • Maintain accurate records of IT assets, including hardware, software, licenses, and warranties.
  • Provide end-user training and documentation on the use of the IT infrastructure and applications, if needed.
  • Propose IT solutions that can support ad hoc engineering IT needs.
  • Provide technical guidance and advice to the end-users and other IT staff on the best practices and solutions for the IT infrastructure.
  • Monitor and report on the performance and status of IT systems and services, and recommend improvements or enhancements as needed.
  • Assist with the procurement, installation, disposal, and relocation of IT assets as required. Ensuring the timely initiation of the renewal processes for the hardware and software maintenance support (software licenses renewal, hardware support, etc.).

Qualifications & Competencies

Applicants shall have a university degree in computer science or in IT related studies.

Hands-on experience with the following:

  • Experience with 1st and 2nd line user support
  • Experience with Windows and Linux server administration.
  • Experience with heterogenous IT environments – Windows and Unix/Linux.
  • GNU\Linux administration using different distributions (SLES, RHEL are often used)
  • Knowledge of network protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, NTP)
  • Solaris administration and troubleshooting.
  • File System administration (EXT2-4, BTRFS, XFS, quota management, NFS)
  • Shell scripting
  • Basic IT System design skills
  • Definition, implementation, testing and documentation of end-to-end system changes

Experience in the installation, administration and troubleshooting on some of the following shall be considered as an advantage:

  • Knowledge of Cloud Technologies (OpenStack, Docker/Kubernetes, orchestration via Morpheus, automation via ansible/salt, etc)
  • Advanced VMware vCenter / PowerVC management and troubleshooting
  • High availability environments
  • Lenovo/HP Blade HW management
  • Experience with the monitoring tools based on Nagios
  • Carry out basic hardware support like installing interface cards or physically setting up networks.
  • The work is organized using a ticketing system (OTRS) therefore, previous experience on helpdesk and ticket handling is an advantage.
  • ITIL Experience

  • Fluency in English
  • Very good analytical skills
  • Experience and willingness working with user communities
  • Good written and verbal communication and team working skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently in an organised and disciplined manner
  • Customer oriented, used to communicate directly with technical end users

The variety of the tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills together with the ability to effectively cooperate within the team.

  • This is a full-time position located at ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands.
  • The foreseen start of work is March 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.
