Senior Instrumentation Engineer - Database
SBM Offshore
Imagine your career taking you to the depths of innovation and the heights of impact. Our people enable continuous progress. Their commitment, collective expertise, and unique capabilities are the engine room behind SBM Offshore’s True. Blue. Transition. - shaping the future of energy, and beyond.
About Us:
SBM Offshore is the world’s deepwater ocean-infrastructure expert. Our work is already resulting in cleaner, more efficient energy production. True. Blue. Transition. is our promise to enable that into the future while at the same time using our expertise to support new and existing markets in the blue economy. It starts with Advancing our Core: continuing to advance the decarbonization of traditional energy production. While Pioneering More: helping to enable the energy transition and using our unique capabilities in ocean infrastructure to support more industries to grow sustainably. Sharing our experience for a better blue tomorrow.
Purpose
The Instrument Department in SBM is responsible for the design of Integrated Control and safeguarding panels, Fire & Gas equipment and Communication Systems. This includes all associated field devices, such as instruments and valves, and bulk materials such as cables and tubing.
In the FEED and subsequent Basic and Detailed phases of a project, the designers and engineers start with defining the concept and then continue to work-out the details of the systems, implement vendor data and work closely together with our sub-contractors to prepare the detailed documentation for construction, commissioning and operation. By making use of reputable suppliers, standardized solutions and experienced contractors SBM is able to do this in a short time frame and of high quality.
Role Overview:
The P&ID Review and Instrumentation Database Engineer is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, consistency, and completeness of piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and maintaining the instrumentation database throughout the project lifecycle. This role bridges engineering design, data integrity, and project execution, ensuring compliance with industry standards and project specifications.
Responsibilities
- P&ID Review:
- Review and validate P&IDs for correctness, completeness, and compliance with SBM corporate and project standards.
- Ensure proper representation of instrumentation, control loops, and interconnections as per SBM legends.
- Verify tag numbering, signal flow, and consistency with process design documents. Liase with process control team for appropriate representation of complex control loops and record in the database.
- Coordinate with piping, process, mechanical, electrical, ICSS and process control teams to resolve discrepancies.
- Instrumentation Database Management:
- Work in AVEVA Diagrams to provide instrumentation input to the P&ID’s regarding tagging and basic instrument functionality.
- Work in Aveva Engineering to ensure consistency between P&ID and instrumentation databases. P&IDs would be SBM internal as well as P&IDs from Engineering Sub-contractors, mechanical pkg. vendors.
- Develop, maintain, and update the instrumentation database in Smart Plant Instrumentation.
- Ensure accurate entry of instrument tags, specifications, and attributes.
- Perform data integrity checks and resolve inconsistencies between P&IDs and the database.
- Generate reports such as instrument index, I/O lists, and cable schedules. Can independently define IO types, Control System types, Signal types
- Ensure quality input for the Instrumentation Design team.
- Quality Assurance & Compliance:
- Ensure adherence to codes and standards like ISA, IEC, SBM Corporate & project-specific standards and client requirements.
- Support audits and reviews for instrumentation deliverables.
- Coordination & Communication:
- Interface with engineering disciplines, procurement, and construction teams.
- Provide technical support during design reviews and HAZOP sessions.
- Documentation & Deliverables:
- Prepare and maintain instrument datasheets, loop diagrams, and wiring diagrams.
- Support development of control narratives and cause & effect diagrams.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation, Electrical, or Control Engineering.
- Strong knowledge of P&IDs, instrumentation symbols, mechanical Pkg. interfaces and ISA standards.
- Proficiency in instrumentation database tools (e.g., SmartPlant Instrumentation, Aveva Engineering, or similar).
- Familiarity with control systems (DCS, PLC) and field instrumentation.
- Attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
- A proactive approach, team player to take initiatives, professional communication in English (written & verbal) and conversant with MS Office applications.

- FPSO experience will be an advantage. Experience with instrumentation for Marine applications is also an advantage.
- Proven competence with instrumentation design in hazardous areas (e.g. IECEx001) is preferable.
- Knowledge of data integration between engineering tools (SPI, P&ID software).
- Understanding of project lifecycle from FEED to commissioning.
