We are looking for a IRIS² Security System Engineer to work at ESTEC’s premises in Noordwijk, Netherlands where you will be providing Security Engineering support in relation to IRIS² entrusted tasks related to security, in particular for 5G Stack protocols.

ESA’s Directorate of Connectivity and Secure Communications (CSC) drives innovation in satellite telecommunications by coordinating research, supporting the development of advanced technologies, and fostering strong industrial partnerships across Europe and Canada. It plays a key role in enabling the creation of cutting-edge satellite-based products and services, while also investing in public-private partnerships to develop and demonstrate next-generation communication systems.
CSC is expanding its involvement in externally funded initiatives, notably contributing to the Union Secure Connectivity Programme (IRIS²), aimed at enhancing resilience, interconnectivity, and security through satellite infrastructure
Tasks and activities
The scope of technical support will include system engineering activities in the following areas:
- Interface definition and management between spacecraft, payload, ground, and external systems
- System architecture, development, and validation of the optical and RF communication systems
- Definition of broadband and satellite data relay services, as well as new developments using optical and RF communications
- System‑level modelling, simulations, and performance assessments
- Interoperability and standardisation activities, such as, communication protocols, data formats.
- Definition and development of space‑to‑ground communication links
Activities may include:
- Requirements engineering and consolidation
- Functional and physical architecture definition.
- Design trade-off analysis.
- Interface definition.
- Technical risk assessment.
Skills and experience
The following skills and experience are mandatory:
- Master’s Degree or equivalent in a relevant field.
- At least 5 years of experience in relevant field.
- Desire to work both autonomously and as part of a team, in an international multicultural environment.
- Solution oriented mindset, with a customer focused communication skill.
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
