Job Description

We are looking for a new senior software engineer for our quantum networking device engineering team. At Q*Bird, we build hardware devices with complex full-stack software running natively on device. You will be responsible for the operations behind our development pipeline (DevOps), our release and deployment procedures (customer operations), and helping our customers get their new quantum tech up and running. The firmware/software on our devices comprises several platforms and toolchains (think embedded and distributed systems), whose DevOps you’d be responsible for. We release firmware/software updates to customers for them to install themselves (think bin images, installers, device restarts, and a sensible process), which you’d be responsible for. As quantum networking is cutting-edge technology, our customers will need your support in understanding how to correctly configure and set up the quantum networking devices. You will also help with our IT infrastructure (think build servers), system testing (think infra for CI tests), and help customers use our systems.

You must be comfortable working with new devices (think of high-end routers) and becoming an expert user for customers to turn to as they learn how to use the devices at their locations. You’ll work closely with our software, firmware, and digital design teams, helping to improve our development processes and release processes and ways of working.

You are passionate about advancing quantum and networking technologies and want to contribute to ground-breaking tech. Familiarity with quantum is not required (we teach you that). You can work independently, are a pro-active, hands-on person, and can easily adapt to rapidly changing priorities. You need to be self-sufficient, work without relying on a big team, and be comfortable with a start-up environment. Above all, you’re a team player, and excited to work in a mixed team of hardware engineers, software engineers, and scientists.

Main objectives and responsibilities:

  • Building and implementing new development tools and infrastructure.
  • Working on ways to automate and improve development and release processes.
  • Working with software developers and software engineers to ensure that development follows established processes and works as intended.
  • Deploy updates and fixes, and provide technical support.

Your Profile

You are someone with:

  • Work experience as a DevOps Engineer or similar software engineering role.
  • Proficiency with Git and GitHub workflows, CI/CD pipelines and development, and IT devices and infrastructure.
  • Experience with product and software deployment, especially software running natively on a device, rather than on servers in the cloud.
  • Experience with some of the core technologies used: Docker, Linux and Linux administration, BitBucket, Jira.
  • A degree in computer science, engineering, or a comparable discipline.

Other preferred skills and qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and experience with computer hardware.
  • Experience with networking and network devices.

We expect that the successful applicant will not satisfy all the above points, but has expertise in key areas and significant knowledge in most areas.

Candidates must be willing to relocate to the Netherlands, and we are pleased to offer sponsorship to support your move.
