Background And Key Responsibilities

Leiden University’s Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) is inviting applications for a full-time Assistant Professor position in International Organization and Multi-Level Governance. The successful candidate will have demonstrable record in researching decision-making or policy making in multi-level governance settings, involving international organizations and national or sub-national arenas, a strong teaching background in quantitative methods as well as in topics related to the Institute’s Bachelor’s and Master’s programme offerings. The position is aimed at strengthening the Institute’s teaching, research and grant-acquisition capacities in a phase of growth and exciting interdisciplinary research opportunities.

The successful applicant will be part of an ambitious and dynamically growing Institute and is expected to:
  • conduct independent research in the fields of International Organization and Multi level governance, including topics related to international institutions and their impact in national and local settings.
  • support the ongoing development and implementation of the ISGA’s research strategy by publishing in leading international outlets and by attracting research grants.
  • teach in the advanced MSc programme International Relations and Diplomacy.
  • teach in the Bachelor Security and Safety Studies or the minor in Global Affairs.
  • be able to teach quantitative methods courses.
  • contribute to the development of new courses or programme offerings at the graduate or undergraduate level.
  • participate in committees related to functioning of the Institute and its programmes.
  • supervise theses.
Selection Criteria
  • PhD degree in Political Science, International Relations, Public Administration, International Organization, or a closely related field.
  • Strong research qualities manifested in an established or developing publication record that includes publications in international peer-reviewed journals in areas broadly related to international relations, international organization; multi-level governance and European studies,
  • Demonstrable experience in - and passion for - research-led teaching.
  • Applicants must be able to teach in English.
  • Ability to connect academic research to policy-oriented impact.
  • Strong policy network in the area of, international organization, multi-level governance international relations or comparative politics more generally.
  • Demonstrable commitment to contributing to public debate related to core issues of multi-level governance and international institutions.

Institute of Security and Global Affairs

The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) is a leading research and education institute, focusing on the most pressing local, national, European and global security issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. It currently hosts more than 120 academic and support staff members and offers the BA in Security and Safety Studies, the MSc in Crisis and Security Management, the Advanced MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy, the executive MSc in Cyber Security as well as a variety of innovative teaching offerings in the professional and MOOC fields. In addition, ISGA runs popular Minor Programmes in Global Affairs, Security, Safety and Justice and Intelligence Studies as well as the Faculty’s Honour Programme in Security and Global Affairs.

Terms and conditions

The envisaged starting date for this position is 1st of December 2023. The appointment will be under the terms of the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of Dutch Universities. The appointment will initially be for 12 months, with the possibility and intention of turning the position into a permanent one, based on funding and performance.

The salary varies, depending on qualifications and experience, from € 3.974 to € 5.439 gross per month based on full-time employment (scale 11 for Assistant professor).

Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualifications (UTQ). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, he/she must be willing to obtain it within two years of appointment.
