About INSO

Founded in 2011, the International NGO Safety Organization (INSO) is an international NGO that supports humanitarian aid workers by establishing safety coordination platforms in insecure contexts. INSO provides registered NGOs with a range of free services, including real-time incident tracking, analytical reports, safety-related data and mapping, crisis management support, staff orientations, and training. INSO provides daily support to more than 1,500 NGOs operating in 24 of the world’s most insecure countries. INSO is registered in the Netherlands, with its headquarters located in The Hague, a city renowned for its international focus on peace and justice.

About the Open-Source Data Collection (OSDC) team

We are a small, agile team embedded in the INSO HQ Data, Technology and Learning Department, delivering open-source data for safety and security monitoring, and situational awareness analysis for humanitarian actors in conflict-affected contexts. Our work sits at the intersection of open-source data, emerging AI tooling, and human judgment. The OSDC eMonitor pipeline processes real-time online information on security, safety, and humanitarian incidents in hard-to-reach, data-poor contexts, using NLP/AI models with a human-in-the-loop quality gate. This internship sits inside that quality function.

The Role

As a Quality Testing & Feedback Intern, you will test and review outputs from our NLP/AI models, checking their accuracy and identifying areas for improvement. You will document your findings and help track data quality issues across testing cycles.

Your contributions will have a direct impact on humanitarian operations, helping improve how security incident data is processed and supporting organisations in making informed safety and access decisions in challenging contexts.

You will support the team with the following learning-oriented tasks

• Review processed text and data to identify inaccuracies and distinguish recurring issues from one-off errors.
• Document identified issues clearly, including the type of error, affected model, possible cause, and potential impact.
• Check whether errors may affect the interpretation of security information, including terminology, actors, or contextual references.
• Support testing and improvement of quality-check methods, such as sampling and verification procedures.
• Work with the Head of OSDC, OSDC specialists, Methodology Specialist, software engineers, and relevant INSO country teams to discuss findings and improve testing approaches.

What we are looking for

• Currently studying or recently graduated in a relevant field such as data, international relations, conflict studies, humanitarian affairs or a related discipline.
• Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail.
• Curiosity about conflicts, humanitarian crises and international affairs.
• Good written and spoken English.
• Ability to communicate findings clearly and constructively.
• A genuine willingness to learn and take initiative.
• Basic familiarity with Excel and other Microsoft Office tools.
• Previous humanitarian, research, or internship experience is an advantage, but not essential.
• Interest in AI, data or humanitarian security is welcome; technical expertise is not required.

Eligibility

• Currently enrolled in a recognised university or university of applied sciences, or recently graduated, as applicable to the internship arrangement.
• The internship must be compatible with your academic programme and applicable Dutch internship requirements.
• Legally authorized to undertake an internship in the Netherlands for the full duration.
• Available for at least one day per week during office hours (possible to split into two working days).
• Able to complete the required internship agreement with your educational institution and INSO.

Terms & Conditions

• This is a paid learning internship based at INSO Headquarters in The Hague. The internship is primarily focused on learning and professional development, with agreed learning objectives, supervision and an internship agreement.
• The monthly gross internship allowance is €450 for Bachelor students and €650 for Master students, pro-rated according to agreed working hours and approved timesheets. The internship will last a minimum of 4 months, with a possible extension up to a maximum total duration of 6 months, subject to learning needs and approval.
• Working hours are 8–32 hours per week, up to a maximum of 36 hours, as agreed with the supervisor. Interns do not accrue statutory employee vacation entitlement; reasonable time off can be agreed with the supervisor without affecting the learning objectives.
• INSO does not provide relocation, accommodation or commuting allowances. Interns must have the legal right to undertake an internship in the Netherlands for the full internship period, and INSO does not sponsor visas or residence permits.
• Interns are expected to comply with INSO’s Code of Conduct, Safeguarding Policy and applicable HQ policies.
