Contract Duration: | For initial appointments, the Court offers a two-year appointment with the possibility of extension (six month probationary period). |
A roster of suitable candidates may be established for this post as a result of this selection process for fixed-term appointments against both established posts and positions funded by general temporary assistance (GTA).
Organisational context
Provision of high quality language services to ensure effective and efficient conduct of Court business; the Section provides language services to the Presidency, Chambers and Registry, i.e. translation, revision and editing of Court documents; consecutive and simultaneous interpretation required for meetings, trial hearings, press conferences, specialised seminars, diplomatic briefings and other events, held in-house or outside the seat of the Court; recruitment, training and accreditation of field interpreters required to work for Registry officials in the field and/or at the seat of the Court; provision of relevant information ensuring that all services users are familiar with the procedures and types of all the language services provided and with the requirements of the professions in question.
Duties & Responsibilities
The Court Interpreter (English) will be expected to:
- provide simultaneous interpretation of court proceedings and other events held at the seat of the Court or elsewhere;
- provide consecutive and chuchotage interpretation as required;
- prepare thoroughly for interpretation assignments;
- carry out verification of transcripts;
- observe the established terminology and usage of the Court;
- act as chef d'équipe on a rotating basis;
- mentor less-experienced interpreters;
- actively contribute to the terminology and reference databases of the Section;
- take part in regular training sessions with a view to refinin his/her interpretation skills, and
- participate in Section working groups and perform other tasks as required by the Chief of Section and/or Head of the Interpretation Unit, including translation if necessary.
Essential Qualifications
Education
Advanced university degree in interpretation, translation, languages, law or another relevant discipline is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience is accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years (seven years with a first-level degree) ) of simultaneous interpretation experience, with preferably at least two years in an international organisation is required;
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- thorough knowledge of the ethics governing court interpretation;
- excellent analytical, organisational, planning, and IT skills;
- a comprehensive understanding of the International Criminal Court’s basic documents and the specificities of court interpretation, also with regard to the uses of new technologies;
- excellent interpersonal skills, tact and discretion;
- demonstrated ability to work in a team, flexibility, initiative and openness to skills development;
- good research and computer skills;
Knowledge of Languages
Mother tongue proficiency in English and French is required.
Knowledge of another official language of the Court (Arabic, Chinese, Spanish or Russian) would be considered an asset.
Short-listed candidates will be invited to take the ICC interpretation test.

General Information
Candidates appointed to posts at a P-5 grade or in the Director category are subject to a maximum aggregate length of service of seven years. This is pursuant to a decision of the Assembly of States Parties (ASP Resolution ICC-ASP/23/Res.2 - ICC-ASP-23-Res.2-ENG) to implement a tenure policy at the Court as of 1 January 2025.
- The selected candidate will be subject to a Personnel Security Clearance (PSC) process in accordance with ICC policy. The PSC process will include but will not be limited to, verification of the information provided in the personal history form and a criminal record check.

- Post to be filled by a national of a State Party to the ICC Statute, or of a State which has signed and is engaged in the ratification process or which is engaged in the accession process. This is pursuant to a decision of the Assembly of States Parties (ASP Resolution ICC-ASP/23/Res.3 - ICC-ASP-23-Res.3-ENG) to introduce a moratorium on the recruitment by the ICC of staff of non-States Parties’ nationality.
