Contract Duration

Interns are required to work full time for a period of six months (to be agreed to prior to commencement). Six month assignments are preferred. Internship placements will not be extended beyond six months.

The Opportunity

The International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates and, where warranted, tries individual charges with the gravest crimes of concerns to the international community: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes of aggression. The Court is participating in the global fight to end impunity, and through international criminal justice, the Court aims to hold those responsible accountable for their crimes and to help prevent the crimes from happening again. Organisational Context

The Immediate Office of the Prosecutor (IOP) provides support and critical services to the Prosecutor and the Office with marginal resources, facilitating the Office’s overall aims of being an effective and efficient organ of the Court. IOP performs a variety of critical support, review and advisory functions, notably providing substantive advice and administrative support to the Prosecutor in the implementation of his functions, while more broadly ensuring quality control and management of the Office. On behalf of the Prosecutor, IOP also acts as an interface with the other organs of the Court ensuring effective inter-organ relations and communication as well as cooperation in the overall administration of the Court, and works closely with all components of the Office to organize and record meetings for senior management, implement the Prosecutor’s instructions on any matter so requested and ensure consistency in standards and approach in line with the Prosecutor’s vision and lessons learned.

Public Information Unit (PIU) works in close cooperation with the IOP and is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely presentation of information relating to the OTP through the website and social media; managing contacts with the media, including the development of press lines and responses to media queries; producing media round-ups for key events; conducting event-related media work; drafting action and communication plans based on the overall strategic approach for public information; and managing a variety of communication projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the implementation of media relations of the Office, including media monitoring, analysis, reporting, media logs, drafting and deployment of media responses, facilitation of interviews, media accreditation and media briefings;
  • Conduct research and draft texts;
  • Assist with photography, videography and basic photo and video editing;
  • Assist in drafting and deploying social media content;
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a variety of public information projects and events;
  • Perform other tasks as required.

Required Qualifications

Education:

All candidates must have a degree or be in the final stages of their studies in law, international relations, journalism or a relevant field at a recognised university. Candidates are expected to have a very good record of academic performance.

Experience:

Internship placements focus on candidates in the early stages of their professional careers therefore; practical experience is not an essential prerequisite for selection. However, practical experience that is relevant to the work of the Court may be considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural and multilingual working environment.
  • Strong teamwork skills (listens, consults and communicates proactively).
  • Excellent digital skills, including computer literacy and the use of social media.
  • Excellent drafting skills in English.
  • Photography and basic photo and video editing skills.
  • Good analytical and organisational capabilities.
  • Discretion, reliability, intellectual rigour, honesty, creativity, and perseverance.

Knowledge of Languages:

  • Proficiency in one of the working languages of the Court, French or English. Working knowledge of the other is desirable.
  • Knowledge of another official language of the Court (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish) is an asset.

Remuneration

Please note that the ICC is not able to provide all participants in the Internship and Visiting Professional Programme with remuneration, nor is it possible to provide reimbursement for expenses incurred during the internship or visiting professional placement.

Applicants should therefore be able to support themselves for the duration of their internship or placement.
