The Student Learning Design team leads the design of the IB’s blueprint (specifications) for student learning – ensuring that curriculum, assessment, well-being and personal development are integrated into a coherent future-ready and human-centred learning experience.

The Knowledge/ Learning head leads the design of frameworks that define how learners grow, think, reason, and act across the IB continuum. The role integrates curriculum design with insights from well-being, learning science, and assessment to support meaningful, inclusive and future-ready learning. This role ensures that the design of student learning is evidence-informed, globally relevant and developmentally coherent, supporting the IB mission of human and planetary flourishing.

The head leads collaboration with colleagues across different IB offices, particularly with Research, Schools Systems Design, Curriculum Development, Community and Partnerships, Digital Office and Assessment, to ensure that design of Knowledge/ Learning blue print is aligned with the uniqueness of IB’s education offer.

The post holder stays updated on educational research, educational technologies, produces innovative resources, and documents ideas for future school systems, student learning and IB universal content design. The head ensures that operational efficiency is achieved through effective project management and resolution of conflicting viewpoints. Communication is critical, ensuring timely and accurate information sharing with all stakeholders.

The head will manage the Quality assurance, budget, and stakeholder engagement for the team.

Learning and Knowledge Domains

The Learning and Knowledge Domains team in the Student Learning Design department leads the design and evolution of knowledge frameworks that articulate the nature of each knowledge domain, including its knowledge tenets, disciplinary and diverse epistemologies and its contribution to the aims of an IB education.

In doing so, the L&KD supports the entire organization’s educational mission, they make sure that the IB curriculum is globally relevant, future-ready, and truly reflective of the IB’s vision – a cohesive educational journey that nurtures informed, thoughtful learners capable of making ethical decisions for their lives, communities, and the planet.


The Student Learning Design team leads the design of the IB’s blueprint (specifications) for student learning – ensuring that curriculum, assessment, well-being and personal development are integrated into a coherent future-ready and human-centred learning experience.
  • A higher degree in a relevant discipline, educational leadership, learning design, or curriculum design and development.
  • Proven record of leadership and management experience, with evidence of organizational and administrative abilities and team leadership, preferably in an international context.
  • Experience in teaching at secondary or tertiary level, or appropriate experience in other relevant educational fields. Experience teaching IB offerings is desirable.
  • Experience in learning design and curriculum development, assessment, and/or educational research.
  • Experience working with digital media.
  • Experience writing for a range of audiences.
  • Understanding of current developments and trends in teaching, learning and assessment.
  • Good organizational and analytical skills, with meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English, the working language of the organization, French or Spanish is an advantage.
  • Ability to lead and work within a team and foster a collaborative environment.
  • Competency in using standard Office software.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects to agreed timelines.
  • Ability to present effectively for a variety of audiences and purposes.

  1. Learning Design: Responsible for the blueprint design of specified student learnings/ knowledge, ensuring alignment with well-being, engagement, and intercultural approaches.
  2. Integration and Collaboration: Coordinate Office initiatives under the direction and agreement with the Department leader of the education office. Transfer and integration of the designed blueprints for designated learnings to the relevant Curriculum Development Manager(s) departments, Oversee collaboration across departments and with other IB divisions (e.g, Community, Partnerships and Development Office). to ensure integration of practitioners or schools feedback.
  3. Quality Assurance and Review: Manage the blueprinting and enhancements process, ensuring a common, coherent, and consistent approach. Quality assure and sign off on the deliverables of senior managers before Education Office management review. Ensure the blueprinting review process adheres to IB’s standards and practices for design, supporting organizational strategy.
  4. Budget and Resource Management: Manage the design budget, ensuring efficient use of resources and adherence to budget constraints. Plan for business continuity through effective contingency and resource planning.
  5. Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with multiple external stakeholders, including IB World Schools, universities, and professional organizations. Collaborate with the recognition and development teams to gather feedback. As needed, represent the designated offerings and the IB in various contexts, including committees, school administrators, universities, and external agencies, to promote the mission of the organization.
  6. Research and Innovation: Work closely with the Innovation lab and Research teams to stay updated on educational research and major developments in teaching, learning, assessment and international education to ensure intellectual rigour in IB’s approach to student learning design. Document and disseminate connections and ideas as a foundation for future design iterations.
  7. Operational Efficiency: Achieve quality outcomes within agreed timelines and budget. Navigate and resolve conflicting viewpoints and diverse cultural assumptions to achieve desired outcomes. Use a project management approach to effectively scope, plan, manage risk and change, allocate resources, and prioritize goals.
