Job Purpose:

The Content Development Editor role sits within the Multilingual Editorial Production department and provides editorial services to the whole of the organization. The role is balanced between managing multiple external copy editors and personally conducting development/substantive edits in collaboration with in-house content creators. Most of the content published by the IB is translated into French and Spanish, and some content is translated into additional languages. The Content Development Editor ensures that the English source text is as clear, succinct, and accessible as possible for IB teachers and schools located all over the world.

Key Accountabilities

Editorial Input:

  • Collaborate closely with content authoring departments to enhance readability and value of English content.
  • Provide developmental editing guidance, shaping language usage and optimizing content organization.
  • Contribute to copy editing efforts, refining writing, structure, grammar, consistency, and terminology.
  • Execute in-house editorial tasks, including content development editing, copyediting, and final proofing.
  • Prepare the final English manuscript for production and translation within agreed-upon constraints.

Editorial Management:

  • Serve as a key editorial contact for English queries within assigned project teams.
  • Monitor and communicate progress of editorial tasks, ensuring alignment with content plans.

Management:

  • Support recruitment and development of freelance English language editorial resources.
  • Collaborate with Lead Content Development Editor to identify suitable freelance resources and commission tasks.
  • Review quality of freelance editorial work, offer constructive feedback, and contribute to information distribution.

Editorial Governance:

  • Contribute to maintaining and updating the English house style guide and writing guidelines.
  • Provide guidance, advice, and training on English house style to colleagues.
  • Advise content authoring departments on content organization and consistency, including through the development of templates.

Knowledge Management:

  • Stay informed about developments in publishing and translation, making recommendations for changes.
  • Ensure tools, team practices, and processes align with objectives of the Multilingual Editorial Production department.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree or possess equivalent publishing experience.
  • Proven content development and/or editorial experience in a content delivery environment (minimum 4 years), preferably in an educational context. This should include personally carrying out editorial work, dealing with external suppliers and working on a variety of print and online publications.

Technical and Soft Skills:

  • Possess an excellent, native (or equivalent) command of the English language.
  • Working knowledge of at least one other IB language (French, Spanish, etc.) is an advantage.
  • Showcase exceptional time management, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to simplify complex ideas for a diverse audience.
  • Experience delivering presentations and/or training is preferred
  • Familiarity with plain English writing/editing and managing content for translation.
  • Approach problems with a focus on practical outcomes and problem solving.
  • Exhibit negotiation skills and experience managing large, long-term projects.
  • Be agile and focused when facing changes in deadlines, scope, or authorship.
  • Display meticulous attention to detail and consistent accuracy.
  • Familiarity with publishing technology and authoring tools.
  • Experience with IB programs, international education standards, or educational materials is advantageous.
