The BA Textile and Fashion Department of the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) is looking for a new Tutor Textile & Material design (0.2 FTE).

What will you do?
As the Textile & Fashion department, material is central to everything we do, in both textiles and fashion. The department aims to focus on developing new perspectives in the field of textile and fashion design, where craftsmanship and material development are key starting points to stimulate current and innovative personal visions among students.
We want to strengthen our team in two different ways but hope to find these qualities in one person. We are looking for someone who can teach Textile Design within the textile program and material design within the fashion program.
The Textile Design class (year 1) is a linear weekly program that builds the foundation of a new generation of textile designers through different design assignments, getting acquainted with different design methods, material development and textile techniques.
The Material Design class is introduced to emphasize the importance of material development as an essential part of the fashion design process. This class will be taught in year 2 and 3 with an alternating character in the schedule, closely related to the Fashion Design class.
Both courses make an important contribution to the development of the student's personal artistic handwriting. The Textile Design course educates students to develop materials based on a personal fascination that can be shaped and placed in a contemporary world. And in fashion a broader perspective on textiles is necessary to develop a more authentic and relevant vision that can bring innovation and meaning.
In both classes it would be your role to direct students to develop and connect technical skills and material knowledge and to gain understanding of how to translate material research into meaningful 2D and 3D expressions. Through experimentation and reflection, students discover and develop a personal style and method of working in close connection to the other courses offered.
Your profile
- You are a (textile) designer active in the international professional field with broad knowledge of textile techniques and material development;
- You are familiar with art education and have the sensitivity to recognize and guide the development of someone's authentic talent;
- You can develop and teach a program connecting to societal and ecological issues, that encourages students to initiate and carry out a design process;
- You can activate and share your knowledge and network to inspire and motivate students and connect them with the professional field.
- You can relate to the 3D aspects of textile design; you have affinity with product design, in particular Fashion design;
- You have good communication skills in English conversation;
- You are eligible to work in the Netherlands under an employment contract

The Royal Academy of Art (KABK), together with the Royal Conservatoire, forms the University of the Arts, The Hague. KABK was founded in 1682, making it the oldest art academy in the Netherlands. KABK forms a community in which knowledge and passion go hand in hand. Our education is intensive, structured, and small-scale, with students having considerable freedom to shape their personal interests and ambitions. Our programmes are focused on an eminently international professional field and are taught in English. KABK offers 7 bachelor’s and 6 master’s programmes, a School for Young Talent, and various other preparatory programmes. The Bachelor Textile & Fashion Design offers a four-year English-taught programme in which we want to focus on developing new perspectives in the field of textile and fashion design. We find ourselves in a rapidly changing society, and we want our students to play a conscious role in it. Research and experiment, both in theory and in shape and material, are essential to stimulate and develop a current and innovative personal vision.
We will speak to the possibilities and ambition of positioning textile and fashion in one department by expanding on the particularities of each to develop them equally towards a sustainable future perspective.
You will teach one day a week for 34 weeks a year. A flexible arrangement of teaching hours may sometimes be necessary. We aim to have the contract start on 1 October 2026. The contract is temporary for this academic year 2026-27 until 1 September 2027 and can be renewed in case of mutual satisfaction.
The salary is between min. € 4,427.64 and max. € 6,677.447 gross per month for a fulltime appointment (scale 11), depending on education and work experience. The cao-Hbo has a generous leave scheme, an 8% vacation allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus. You can also participate in health insurance and/or disability insurance on favourable conditions.
