Tutor Painting
Hogeschool der Kunsten Den Haag
The BA Fine Arts department at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) is currently seeking a Painting tutor, BA Fine Arts (0.28 FTE)
Vacancy number: 26-020
What will you do?
The BA Fine Arts programme at KABK approaches art as a form of inquiry that connects making, thinking, and reflecting. The studio is understood as a shared learning environment where experimentation, dialogue, and research unfold. The programme aims to situate artistic practice within contemporary contexts—cultural, conceptual, social, ecological, and political—while encouraging students to develop their own individual and collective working methods and positions.
For the academic year 2026–2027, we are seeking a painting tutor who will guide first-year students in their initial encounter with artistic study. The first year focuses on developing fundamental study habits, working methods, and an openness to experimentation across media, supported by tutorials, group critiques, and presentations.
Within this context, you will
- Introduce painting as a contemporary, expanded, and critical practice, in dialogue with other media, material processes, and artistic approaches;
- Guide students in material exploration, including surface, colour, gesture, temporality, and process;
- Support students in developing working methods, documentation practices, and reflective skills;
- Facilitate both group-based assignments and individual tutorials, responding to diverse student needs;
- Contribute to a collective studio culture, fostering dialogue, care practices, peer learning, and experimentation;
- Engage painting not only as a medium, but also as a conceptual and research-based approach within contemporary art discourse.
- Initiate and lead a study group focused on painting, offering a space for more specialised or in-depth exploration of painterly practices, methods, and discourses within the broader programme.
- Work together with technical services and workshops to guide students in developing safe and sustainable painting practices, including the use, storage, and disposal of materials and chemicals, fostering environmental awareness across all four years of the programme.
You will teach one day per week and work closely with a team of tutors. The role also includes participation in the wider activities of the department, such as assessments, excursions, open days, and the Festival of Ideas.
Profile
- We are looking for an artist and educator who has active artistic practice with a strong grounding in contemporary painting (broadly understood, including expanded and interdisciplinary approaches);
- Demonstrates an interest in teaching at an introductory (Year 1) level, with sensitivity to different learning styles and backgrounds;
- Has solid teaching experience in studio-based education, including tutorials and group critiques;
- Can connect painting to contemporary artistic, social, and material debates;
- Enjoys working collaboratively within a team-based teaching environment and contributes to a communicative, supportive, and inclusive learning culture.
- Is fluent in spoken and written English and able to provide clear feedback and assessment texts;
- Lives in the Netherlands or is eligible to work in the Netherlands.
