Your role
The Energy Eastern and Southern Africa team (ESAF) team is looking for an enthusiastic Associate. In this role, you are mostly involved in the client and portfolio management side of our growing loan portfolio:
The Associate is responsible for monitoring the progress and performance of a portfolio of renewable energy projects in the ESAF region. Specific tasks include:
- Analyzing operational and financial reporting and data of existing clients (e.g., financial performance, compliance with covenants, assessment of forecasts, etc.);
- Writing reports and managing internal processes related to monitoring the performance of existing clients (annual reviews, change requests, waivers, etc. and participating in discussions with Credit, Legal, and other departments within FMO).
- Preparing market and financial analyses of clients, sectors, and countries.
- Supporting (Senior) Portfolio Officers in the team in managing relationships with these clients at an operational working level.
- Participating in client visits when required (international travel).
- Supporting the (Senior) Investment Officers in the ESAF team throughout the execution, contracting, and approval phase of new or repeat transactions.
- Managing the internal systems and processing and filing of customer data, including KYC, ESG, Impact, financials, legal, and insurance.
- Acting as a knowledgeable sparring partner for other team members.

Your team
The ESAF team comprises 13 investment professionals (including this vacancy) and is responsible for the sourcing, execution, and supervision of all debt-related energy investments in the East and Southern Africa region. The team is responsible for a growing portfolio of around 40 clients and circa EUR 500 million exposure and is supported by a team of environmental, social, insurance, legal, and compliance specialists.
The Energy sector has been prioritized by FMO as one of three strategic sectors under Strategy 2030 which aims to contribute to SDG7 and SDG13. FMO is a leading financier in the energy sector in emerging markets. Next to financing energy generation projects (mainly solar, wind, and hydropower) and distributed energy solutions, FMO is broadening its energy scope further in segments that are critical to realize a zero-carbon energy transition pathway and supply chain.
The department comprises about 55 professionals focusing on senior debt and mezzanine finance. FMO aims to build a substantial portfolio of sustainable investments that realize steady and market-driven returns. The total Energy portfolio amounts to approximately EUR 2.3 billion. The department has four regional teams servicing our target markets: The Eastern & Southern Africa (ESAF), West & North Africa and Middle East (WA/MENA), Asia & Eastern Europe (Asia/ECA), and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).
Your background
- Master’s degree in economics, finance, or business administration;
- Around 2 to 3 years of relevant working experience in the banking or (renewable) energy sector. Experience in emerging markets, especially Africa, is a plus.
- Experience in portfolio management, transaction analysis, and execution. Specific project finance experience is a plus.
- Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal
- Proven analytical and risk assessment skills, including financial modelling skills.
