Description

Lead Space Segment Engineer in the SAGA Project within the Satellite Programmes Department in the Directorate of Connectivity and Secure Communications (D/CSC).

ESA contributes to the development of the European Commission’s EuroQCI space segment, primarily through the ESA Secure and Cryptographic (SAGA) Project, which is the EuroQCI First Generation component.

The SAGA Project aims to develop and deploy an end-to-end space mission. The project focuses on the development of critical QKD technologies by European industry up to preliminary service validation, which will become the EuroQCI First Generation component (space and the related ground/user segment) and will help to prepare for a EuroQCI operational system definition.

Duties

Your tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • contributing to the management of the industrial activities relating to the satellite and its equipment by leading the specification, design, procurement, development, and verification/acceptance throughout the project lifetime;
  • monitoring the industrial progress and design evolution for the satellite and its equipment, ensuring it remains consistent with the technical and programmatic requirements;
  • monitoring industrial development and verification activities to ensure proper verification, including resolving non-conformances; supporting the assessment of deviations and waivers;
  • contributing to the autonomy and operability concept and supporting the development of the FDIR capabilities as necessary;
  • coordinating with PA, System, Payload and Security leads during development, integration and testing activities for the resolution of activity deviations;
  • providing regular reporting to project management and identifying technical risk areas, proposing and monitoring mitigation measures;
  • contributing to the management of the schedule and proposing schedule risk mitigation actions within your area of responsibility;
  • managing the specialised engineering support from the ESA Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality and the Directorate of Operations relating to the terms of reference;
  • monitoring the industrial preparation for in-orbit spacecraft commissioning and service provision in collaboration with project teams and ground teams as necessary;
  • providing ad hoc support to other CSC-P projects within the terms of reference as necessary.

You may have delegation responsibility from project management in respect of programmatic aspects.

Technical competencies

Multi-disciplinary and comprehensive knowledge of equipment qualification, satellite design and assembly integration and test
Knowledge of ESA and mission/spacecraft development, verification and procurement processes
Significant relevant experience in ESA space systems development, verification and project review processes
Understanding of system requirements and interfaces for satellite communications projects
Understanding of industrial costs, schedule and project risk management processes

Education

A master’s degree in a relevant domain is required for this post.

Additional requirements

You should have the ability to adapt to new working methods and environments. In addition, you should have:

  • a strong result orientation with the ability to set priorities and present practical solutions both orally and in writing;

Relevant previous project experience and, in particular, technical competence in optical and/or QKD technology is a distinct asset.

People management experience, as well as experience in diverse functional areas relevant to ESA activities, is an asset.

In principle, recruitment will be within the advertised grade band (A2-A4). However, if the selected candidate has less than four years of relevant professional experience following the completion of the master’s degree, the position may be filled at A1 level.

Applicants must be eligible to access information, technology, and hardware which is subject to European or US export control and sanctions regulations & eligible to acquire the security clearance by their national security administrations.

During the recruitment process, the Agency may request applicants to undergo selection tests.
