About The Pooled Fund On International Energy
The Pooled fund on International Energy (PIE) is an international grant making and strategy platform with a mission to secure a safe climate, clean air and prosperity through encouraging a just transition in the power and steel sectors.
We work with charitable foundations and regional climate foundations to support a diverse set of research institutions, think tanks and civil society organisations working with governments, business and other parts of society all over the world. We aim to back local organisations and international partners to overcome the barriers to clean energy and steel.

About This Role
PIE is seeking a talented consultant to join our international team on a part-time consultancy contract for a maternity cover. This is an 8-month contract, with the possibility of extension to 10 months. The preferred start date is as soon as possible, and we are looking for a consultant who can commit to working at least two full days a week, but full-time is possible.
The successful candidate will play a key role in implementing PIE's coal transition strategy, supporting grant making, coordination, and strategic engagement across priority geographies. The role requires close collaboration with the Programme Director(s), other regional and thematic teams, and external partners to ensure that PIE's coal strategy is delivered effectively and that grantees are well-supported.
Scope of Work
The key tasks include:
Contribute to the implementation and refinement of PIE's coal transition strategy in alignment with overall international programme goals.
Manage and implement related grant making processes by working closely with grantees, the operations team, and other programme team members.
Support the Programme Director(s) in grant management, coordination, and strategic planning related to grantees and partners.
Provide timely and effective support to partners and networks, including convening and knowledge-sharing activities. Contribute to the development and implementation of the PIE International strategies with other team members.
Roles & Responsibilities
The Consultant will work under the International Programme of PIE and will be directly supervised by a Programme Director. They will work closely with other PIE teams, especially the Operations and Grant Management team, Asia in the World team, Africa team, and LAC team, as well as external partners.
Key responsibilities include:
Strategy development & project management
Support the delivery and ongoing refinement of strategy, ensuring alignment with programme goals, priorities, and budgets.
Co-develop and implement strategies with grantees and partners across priority countries and regions.
Monitor and evaluate progress and impact of initiatives and grants, identifying risks and opportunities.
Support Directors in preparing materials for fundraising and donor reporting
Act as a liaison to report regular progress to donors and internal stakeholders as required.
Grant-making
Identify and scope relevant grantees independently and/or in coordination with other PIE programmes.
Lead liaison with grantees and ensure strong relationships and effective communication.
Support the full grant-making cycle, ensuring compliance with internal procedures and standards.
Coordination, communication and convening
Liaise with existing and potential partners, including peer regrantors and aligned initiatives.
Ensure proper and timely dissemination of information and consistency across coal-related projects.
Support the design and organisation of convenings, workshops, and strategy discussions with partners as needed.
Research activities and prospecting
Compile, research and analyse developments in policy, finance, and implementation across priority countries.
Scope landscapes and identify strategic opportunities to accelerate just transition pathways.
Coordinate with internal teams to strengthen synergies between coal transition work and broader power and steel sector strategies.
Experience
Minimum Qualifications of the Individual Contractor
A university degree or relevant background or comparable work experience
5-8 years or more of relevant professional experience in academia, media, research, international organisations, think tanks or NGOs.
Experience in/related to climate, finance, investment, energy, or renewable energy sectors is desirable. Relevant experience might include a track record of bringing about change through, for example, public campaigning, advocacy, network mobilisation or inside an agency, business, or government setting.
Qualifications And Competencies
Good written and verbal communication skills.
A demonstrated ability to self-manage and self-organise, including establishing your own workspace and schedule. High efficiency in both individual and team contexts is essential.
A demonstrable ability to deliver work plans in a professional and diligent way, including the ability to coordinate and communicate with partners from different cultural backgrounds, time zones and working context.
Language Requirement
Fluency in English
Duration of Work
This assignment is expected to be finalised at a range of 3-5 working days a week for 8 months, with the possibility of renewal. The start date will be mutually agreed upon, ideally mid- to late April.
