Nalco Water, an Ecolab Company, is seeking a talented principal mechanical engineer with expertise in mechanical engineering, water treatment equipment design and testing to join our innovation efforts and support our customers in the Global High Tech (GHT) industry. We are establishing a dedicated EU GHT RD&E in Leiden, the Netherlands. The Principal Mechanical Engineer This role will lead hardware design and development innovation projects for our Data Center portfolio, communicate regularly with the field/customers/business leaders, design/test/implement new hardware design, and ensure a robust pipeline for new products and platforms that help our customers solve complex hardware problems. We are seeking a candidate with a strong technical background, who is ‘hands-on’, ideally with practical field application experience, who is self-motivated, enjoys versatility and work across different topics and projects, has a desire for collaboration and is a creative problem solver.

The main responsibilities of the role are to:
Manage and drive projects that deliver unique data centre hardware solutions
Support design and testing of water treatment/monitoring systems for Data Center and Microelectronics customers
Design, test and validate equipment (both in lab and field) ensuring compliance with reliability, acoustics, power and thermals.
Develop solutions to complex research problems requiring creativity and ingenuity.
Ensure protection of Nalco Water intellectual property through patenting, licensing, and joint development agreements.
Collaborate with a diverse, cross-functional team of sales leaders, researchers, industry technical consultants, functional business partners, and OEM partners to develop new ideas that solve difficult problems related to water usage and energy efficiency in Data Centers.
Collaborating with a global team, various functions as well as potential 3rd parties on the development of technologies that meet customer needs.
Identifying and understanding customer needs and challenges within the GHT industry (through field visits, engagement with customers and industry experts) and using these learnings and experience to support the development of the EU innovation roadmap.
Provide technical support to sales and customers which includes but not limited to, technical training, application guidance, technical exchange, trouble-shooting, field visits etc.
Qualifications and experience:
Degree or advanced degree in mechanical engineering, or related discipline: BS and 5+ years; MS and 3+ years or PhD (recent graduate or 2 years related experience).
Experience in 3D CAD (Solidworks, Creo, etc..) and FEA tools.
Experience in hands on mechanical design, DFM (Design for Manufacturing) and validation skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse project team.
Strong analytical and problem solving.
Industry / field experience in cooling water treatment (open-recirculating and closed) cooling water treatment and / or effluent treatment is an advantage
Experience in the Global High Tech industry (and associated cooling technologies such as Direct to Chip cooling, Adiabatic) is an advantage
Self-starter, who is willing to learn and has a ‘hands-on’ approach
Good communication skills; with the ability to deliver complex information in an easy-to-understand format
Creative problem-solving skills
Works well under pressure
Proficiency in English (both written and verbal) required
Willingness and ability to travel 10-30 % of the time
