Job description
As Department of Imaging Physics (ImPhys) we’re a hub for physics driven innovation of imaging techniques, technologies, and instrumentation. Through scientific imaging research, instrument engineering, and imaging system design we investigate the natural world from molecule to universe, create value for the healthcare sector and enable our digital society. Research topics span the entire range from curiosity-driven to application-inspired, are always academically challenging, relevant to society, and approached from a fundamental perspective.
We play a key role in providing first class education for TU Delft BSc and MSc students in applied physics. In addition, we teach in interdisciplinary TU Delft programmes and the Erasmus MC – TU Delft BSc and MSc programmes Nanobiology.
Starting in 2024, the Imaging Physics Head of Department will also become responsible for the section Science & Engineering Education. This capacity group shapes and teaches several academic teaching programs (MSc, minor and co-teach), and performs research and outreach in the areas of primary and secondary STEM education.

To strengthen our organization, Imaging Physics is inviting applications for a new Head of Department. The successful candidate will take the lead in fostering a shared vision for the department's research strategy and outreach, and in developing a strategy for its implementation.
Furthermore, as Head of Department you will actively stimulate, initiate, and intensify a shared culture and model for democratic decision-making within our recently renewed organizational structure (PI model). You will take an active role in stimulating the visibility of the Department in national and international networks and facilitate PI’s to take leadership positions in external public and policy-making bodies.
In summary, we are looking for a Head of Department who:
- Will, together with the faculty, develop an ambitious departmental vision and strategy, and will optimize the structure and organisation within the Department accordingly.
- Is an inspiring leader and coach with a communicative leadership style who actively connects professionals in- and outside the Department to strengthen visibility and valorisation.
- Is a full Professor and takes on a prominent role in an existing or new research line in the Department and its education activities.
- Takes responsibility for clear, efficient and transparent communication and decision-making processes within the Department.
- Has a passion for education and actively encourages a high level of involvement of PI’s in education.
- Represents the Department in the management team of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, in the Delft University of Technology, and beyond.
- Is responsible for the operational management and the human resource strategy in the department.
In operational management and policy development, the Head of Department is assisted by a department manager and a management assistant.
Requirements
The ideal candidate:
- Is an internationally renowned full professor in a relevant field of research and has a proven affinity with academic education.
- Has strong leadership skills and the ability to connect and enthuse people.
- Has a vision on future developments and challenges in imaging physics.
- Has a thorough understanding of the Dutch language, culture, and academic landscape.
- A large national and international network.
- Excellent command of the English language.
Conditions of employment
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. Salary varies between 6.648,00 - € 11.686,00 per month gross depending on experience. The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.
Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme.
