The ability to create long-range quantum connections – entanglement – unlocks fundamental advantages in communication. On one hand, networks of ‘classical’ devices, like today’s internet of things, can be augmented with accelerated coordination and unprecedented privacy and security. On the other, entanglement is the critical ingredient for realising quantum networks composed of quantum devices such as computers, sensors, and clocks: it is the basis for a future quantum internet.
