About us:
Damen Workboats, a leading division within the Damen Shipyards Group, consists of several entities including an operating company and four shipyards (Turkey, Vietnam, China and The Netherlands). We specialize in the design, construction, and maintenance of workboats, offering a wide range of vessels for various maritime applications. The role:

The Manager Engineering is responsible for leading and optimizing the engineering processes within the Workboats division. You manage a team of 7 to 8 technical managers who are each leading a team of shipbuilding, mechanical and electrical engineers. This role involves strategic planning, project execution, innovation, stakeholder management, and people management within the Gorinchem office but also with our four yards. The Manager Engineering contributes to the overall engineering strategy and ensures alignment with corporate goals, while also providing expert guidance to internal and external stakeholders.

Key accountabilities:

  • Engineering Strategy & Policy
    Contributing to the development and implementation of the Engineering strategy and policies aligned with Damen’s overall business strategy.

  • Planning & Budgeting
    Developing and managing the Engineering plan and budget, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.

  • Engineering Leadership
    Ensuring effective and efficient engineering processes that meet internal and external demands, in compliance with HSSEQ standards.

  • Expert Advice
    Providing strategic engineering advice to senior management and external stakeholders.

  • Innovation
    Identifying and implementing new technological innovations and trends within the division.

  • Organizational Development
    Continuously improving work processes, systems, and knowledge management within the division.

  • Project Execution
    Overseeing project execution and capacity planning and participating in cross-organizational initiatives.

  • Stakeholder Management
    Building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support strategic objectives.

  • People Management
    Leading, coaching, and developing employees, ensuring optimal team performance and engagement.


Skills & experience:

  • Education:
    You hold a higher vocational education (HBO) degree in shipbuilding, mechanical engineering, or a comparable technical discipline.

  • Experience:
    You bring at least 10 years of experience in leading teams within a manufacturing or project-driven environment. You have solid knowledge of shipbuilding and/or mechanical engineering processes, as well as Systems Engineering practices. Familiarity with different work methodologies such as Agile/Scrum/iPMA is a plus.

  • Technical Skills:
    Experience with a PLM/PDM approach to product development and engineering. Along with experience in associated change projects.

  • Personal Traits:
    Driven, ambitious, proactive, and prepared to go the extra mile. You’re a confident communicator who thrives in an international and dynamic work environment.

  • Communication Skills:
    Strong verbal and written communication skills in Dutch and English.
