Cassini Technologies is an ophthalmic technology company that has spent more than a decade advancing solutions for eye surgery, driven by curiosity, scientific rigor, and a focus on vision. The company designs flexible, connected technologies that adapt to the needs of surgical teams while maintaining interoperability and choice. Headquartered in The Hague, The Netherlands, Cassini collaborates with ophthalmic surgeons and clinics worldwide, supporting workflows from preoperative diagnostics through intraoperative visualization. Guided by principles of confidence, simplicity, and enduring value, Cassini develops solutions that help surgical teams work efficiently, consistently, and with clarity.

The Role

You are our in-house engineer who understands our hardware designs and owns the technical relationship with hardware development partners including reviewing what they build, ensuring the subsystems integrate into one working system, and defining how it gets tested. You are also continuously analyzing for pragmatic improvements. You are personally accountable for the technical integrity of the medical device hardware in scope.

What matters most is that you have owned whole-system integration and verification and not a single subsystem. That experience can come from any complex integrated hardware domain: medical devices, robotics, automotive, instrumentation, or similar.

What You Will Do

  • Review and analyze partner hardware designs, and hold technical authority in design reviews
  • Propose improvements to existing hardware designs
  • Make mechanical, optical, electrical, and software subsystems integrate into one working system, and catch integration issues early
  • Define and run system- and component-level testing, and assess partner test results
  • Author the supporting documentation including test plans and reports, requirements, specifications, design review records
  • Break product requirements down into system and subsystem requirements partners can build against
  • Support design changes, improvements, and root-cause analysis
  • Travel to partner facilities for design reviews, integration, and testing when required

Required Experience

  • Formal degree in a hardware discipline: mechanical, electrical, optical, mechatronics, or systems engineering
  • Substantial experience (typically 10+ years) on integrated hardware systems, including ownership of whole-system integration and verification
  • Depth in one hardware discipline (mechanical, electrical, or optical) and working competence across the others, including how they interface physically
  • Experience reviewing and signing off external partner designs you did not create
  • Experience resolving cross-discipline integration issues
  • Hands-on system- and component-level testing
  • Strong technical writing, in a regulated or safety-critical environment
  • Willing to travel to partner facilities occassionally; strong English

Nice to Have Experience

  • Medical device hardware experience (ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 60601-1, MDR/MDD)
  • Optical systems or optical imaging experience
  • Formal qualification in more than one hardware discipline
  • Working understanding of firmware and software interfaces to hardware
  • Experience managing technical deliverables from external partners

What We Offer

  • Salary in line with market rate for the role and experience level
  • Professional development supported through role-relevant training, courses, and conferences - employee-initiated
  • Office right next to The Hague central station
  • Standard office package: snacks, NS business card for work-related travel, pension contribution
